PROPER CARE
Checking Your Clutch Fluid Level*VERY EASY*
Clutch fluid is vital to the correct operation of a hydraulic clutch. If your vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic clutch, check the clutch fluid level every month according to following procedure:
- Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in REVERSE. Raise the hood.
- Use your owner's manual to identify the location of your clutch fluid reservoir. It is usually near the brake master cylinder reservoir, on the driver's (left) side above the engine and in front of the steering wheel. Wipe any dirt off the exterior surfaces.
- If your clutch fluid reservoir is made of clear plastic and the fluid level can be viewed from the outside, read the fluid level. The fluid level must not fall below the "MIN" mark. If it is below the "MAX" mark, remove the cap and slowly add enough clutch fluid to bring the level up to "MAX." Use the fluid recommended in your owner's manual or an equivalent substitute. In many cases, the clutch fluid recommended is simply DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid. Immediately replace the reservoir cap firmly to prevent absorption of moisture.
- If your clutch fluid reservoir is metal and has a filler cap with dipstick, remove the dipstick, wipe it dry, and reinsert it. Read the fluid level. If it is low, slowly add enough clutch fluid (or brake fluid, if appropriate) to achieve the correct level. Do not allow any dirt or grease to fall into the reservoir. Replace the filler cap tightly.
- Test the operation of the clutch. Close the hood.
The clutch mechanism itself does not require any regular maintenance, but have a professional automotive technician flush and replace your clutch fluid every 24 months.
